If it was up to you the fan, where would you rather see the Shrine Bowl played at?
I've heard a lot of North Carolina fans complain about it being in Spartanburg but where would you rather see it played? Charlotte, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach, Greensboro, Columbia, Charleston? I think Charlotte is the best answer for many reasons but I think finding a place to play is a problem. Memorial Stadium would need a lot of renovations and I doubt Jerry Richardson lets them play at Bank of America Stadium. I do think that when UNCC gets their new stadum done, problem will be solved and make it there from now on.

Charlotte's where it's at. I agree with evrything you wrote but think when Memorial is finished it would be fine.

I think they would need to do massive improvements in both press boxes. I would love nothing more than see the game back at Memorial Stadium, but many of us who go to these games ever year have bad memories of 2001 when the last one was there.... it was rainy, the Panthers were at home, and I bet less than 4000 showed up.
I think if marketed right the game could draw 20,000+ like it did in the old days.... I hope to see it happen soon and will do everything I can to get it back there. |

That's the big IF, Chris -- IF the city would cough up the dough to do the press box improvements, as well as other stadium improvements ... as for Bank of America Stadium, I don't think the RIGHT Richardson was approached about playing host to the game ... now that the two sons are out of the picture, someone should take a shot at Jerry about the game ... in the interim, I think the perfect place (for now, as the crowds aren't as big as they used to be) would be in Salisbury at Catawba College's stadium ... still close to the state line, very accessible from I-85 and the area is relatively football hungry ...

I think Garner-Webb would be a good fit if it wasn't so far from an interstate. |

Personally I would love it to be at Myrtle Beach! I would actually make that trip every year!

Shuford can handle 5,000, but until interest in the game picks back up, that's all you would really need ...

I thought the crowd the past few years was quite nice... I think the game could be marketed to the fans... I think we'll see some changes over next few years.

Does anyone know how many fans Coastal Carolina seats? What about Simeon Stadium in High Point. You can fit 10,000 fans there. |

Elon is a fantastic facility. I wouldn't mind going there. It sure would be a much shorter drive for me!
I wouldn't mind one big gooing to Myrtle Beach either. The weather might be a little warmer, and there is a ton of things to do there prior to Christmas! Last edited by Statman; 07-27-2010 at 07:03 PM. |

It needs to stay near the state line if at all possible.
Triad is too far as is Columbia. Spartanburg is closer for the folks from the west. I think Coastal Carolina may be a good draw with the beach right there with people making it a weekend holiday/shopping trip. Not sure if the stadium is actually big enough though. Gardner Webb would be a nice spot but a little too far from the interstate and very small town area (sorry Shelby and Boiling Springs). Problems in Spartanburg with support now slipping. Too bad as it is not a bad location with a nice facility and great practice facilities although I hear that is going away. Catawba is not the answer. Too small. When weather has been good we have seen crowds closer to 10,000 in recent years but weather can damper that down quite a bit. The game would be swallowed in Panther Stadium unless the Panthers really go behind it and pushed the game along with great advertising and build up. I think the Shrine Bowl needs to focus on some of the bigger names. Hate to say that but recruits drive a lot of the internet buzz. I go with Charlotte first if they can get the facilities up to standard. Second would possibly be Rock Hill but the press box will not get it done with the media that nows covers the game. The major colleges have recruiting sites and each one sends a guy in addition to several news outlets. UNCC will be the recipe for success in my opinion! |

Agreed on UNCC. I think that would be the perfect situation for both parties, and it's a built in recruiting tool for UNCC, what more could they want.

Currently, Coastal Carolina University holds about 6500.
The North/South All Star game is held every year in Myrtle Beach at Myrtle Beach High School. |

The more and more I think about it, I think the game should go back to Charlotte Memorial Stadium. They can accomodate the crowd, parking, hotels, things to do, and hopefully a second time around they will do things better.
Charlotte is the perfect solution. I think you draw better crowds to Charlotte. Other alternatives near the NC/SC border would be Gaffney or maybe even Asheville. |

Why not rotate it all over both states?
Not having it in the same spot every year could make regions more appreciative of it when its their turn to host, thus drawing big crowds each year. |

Man would I love it to be played in Simeon Stadium. Honestly though I think it needs to be played close to the state lines as well. Charlotte is the best solution/location, but I don't think either state will ever be satisfied with it being in the other state if you ask me.

Moving it around the two states has some positives but I think it needs to stay as close to the state borders as possible. That was my problem with Spartanburg, it was another 1.5 hours west of Charlotte which is fairly close to the middle of the two states. |

.
As bad as the NC people don't want it in SC and feel NC is better, the SC people think SC is better and doesn't want it back in NC. Heck if a community really wants it let them put their money where their mouth is and prove their love with their pocketbook. Wherever it is it needs to stay in one place for a minimum of four or five years. Moving it back and forth between states to make it closer to each state and diferent areas might would be good but putting the game on takes a lot of community support. . |

Charlotte and Rock Hill are the two best locations for proximity.
I think you hit the nail on the head, let the community pull out the pocketbook. Not an expert but I am sure that is part of the issue with Spartanburg. If they were killing it financially they would suck up other issues. Bottom line the Shrine Bowl needs more change than just the location. I am NOT talking about the selection of players. I really think they need to take a deep look at how they market the game. It's for a great cause and I want it to prosper. |
