Default Harnett Central in 2010 with Patrick Turner

What can we expect from Harnett Central in 2010 with new coach Patrick Turner at the helm?

The Trojans are frest off of a state championship appearance where they nearly and probably should have beat A.C. Reynolds and return what some beleive to be the best quarterback in the state in Brian Taylor.

I'm hearing that Turner, who used to be Harnett Central's JV coach will run a spread offense with possibly an empty backfield. If so that will limit what Taylor can do in my opinion. I also understand that there isn't any offensive coaches left on staff as most went with Marc Morris to Cleveland HS and one went to Western Harnett.

Even with that being said, I still feel there is enough talent at Harnett Central this year for Turner to be good and try to make some noise. I don't think that the Trojans will return to the 4A title game though. I think 71st, Hillside, Southern Durham, and SE Raleigh will probably fight for that honor.

Another big question mark though still is the lingering rumor that Brian Taylor moves to another school. It's been speculated that he goes to Jack Britt because of his dad's job situation but I don't know and won't even say one way or another until I hear it as officiall.

I also know that they have a fantastic kid who's the backup QB and had a good JV season. I hear he's as fast as Michael Vick in the pocket and backfield. Hopefully they can build another solid era with him because I've heard that the talent is going to drop fast after this class.

SER will not be in the mix for state title. Second round at best.

They now have a Quarterbacks coach. He came over from Campbell. They have the Erickson Stadium 7 on 7 coming up soon. Will anyone be covering this. It would be interesting to know how they do given the circumstances. As far as Brian Taylor leaving I just see this as highly unlikely. I can't see the Taylors packing up and leaving Lillington for the sake of one football season. If Stamey has changed jobs and gone to a bank in Fayetteville as it appears you are implying that doesn't require a move. Half or more of the people in Harnett Co. work in Wake or Cumberland. Fayetteville is an easy commute. I suppose they would have to be highly dissatisfied with the new coach for this to happen. Are they?

Brian Taylor was named Male High School Athlete of the Year by the News and Observer. Besides over 2,000 yards passing and 1,000 rushing in football, he averaged 15 ppg as a forward on the basketball team and had 10 home runs and was 5-0 as a pitcher on the baseball team. The 4.3 gpa is pretty impressive as well. It's a well deserved honor.

I hear he will not be at Harnett Central next year. His father knows how important a senior year is to a QB and knows a new, young, inexperienced head coach is not what he needs. A young head coach is usually detrimental to a Qb's health. I have heard the Fayetteville rumors but don't be surprised is he ends up in Wake County.

That would require a family move. The Taylor's have deep roots in Lillington. I suppose anything is possible but I really doubt these rumors. He is practicing with the team right now. I suppose time will tell.

Empty backfield sets at HC will only make them one-dimensional. All this talk about Brian Taylor, a great QB, people forget about the ALL-STATE RB Jarrod Spears in the backfield. He has to get carries if they are gonna be successful. With some good talent returning, there are gaping holes to fill. On defense, they lost a dominate all conference DT, a shrine bowl DE, a two-time all conference (previous years) SLB and a starting CB. There will be some drop off there. On offense, three lineman need to be replaced and two of them were all conference, included an all world center. They also lose two WR's from a team that only had 6 last year anyway. Those two were not world beaters but, dependable. The JV QB that you speak of, is a freak! He has a very similar skill set to that of Taylor. He is not as big but he is only 14. He is faster and a great arm. He puts you in the mind of Tyrod Taylor up at V'Tech. Don't hold your breathe though, I hear he may play or even be there. So, there are some issues to iron out.

As far as making a run at the state, not very likely. Fuquay is loaded. Middle Creek will be hungry and good with Leatham. Garner returns 15 starters from last year and with Wake County re-alignment, could get some kids back. SER lost alot including one of their TB's going to WFR. Their JV QB was a STUD! Look out of this kid. Tall, athletic and a rocket launcher on his shoulder. If Knightdale's new coach can find some coaches and get all those athletes to play, look out. They are super athletic down there. One kid runs 10.4 100m.

Just my thoughts...

The update is that reports of a transfer were totally false from the beginning and men are bigger gossips than women. His family is still in Lillington, he has been regularly attending summer workouts while also playing baseball and going to various football camps like Clemson and Wake Forest, In short, he ain't going anywhere and was never considering going anywhere.

I too think that all of these state title predictions are far fetch at the moment. On the East side you have Hillside, Southern Durham, Fuquay, Garner, HC and maybe Dudley.

On the West you have ACR, HPC, Ragsdale, maybe Page and maybe Dudley.

It will be a good season this year!!!

Harnett Central has a staff in place now. Turner will serve as offensive coordinator, Wyrick as defensive coordinator, Troth is working with the OBs, a former pro lineman (don't know the name) is working with the big boys, Mendenhall is working with I think DB or LB and some other guy is there just hired as a GC I think. The middle school coaches that were helping while there was no staff continue to help also. I hear the numbers coming out have been good through the voluntary summer workouts. As far as an empty backfield, I think you may see it occasionally. I hear the offense may be opened up even more than in years past. I think they are going to do just fine.

Will the backup qb be eligible in the fall or does he still have to pass summer academy.

The definitive word on the ridiculous gossip regarding Brian Taylor comes directly from Taylor. July 30 edition of The Daily Record: "I thought it was pretty funny to be honest with you. I never talked with anybody from Jack Britt or Lee County. I wasn't even in Harnett County when all that stuff was going on."
