It was announced in May that R.J. Reynolds plans to build a new football stadium on campus, something they've never had, but hundreds of residents have protested and signed a petition in order to stop the construction.
I've been hearing about this from coaches in the city for weeks now but the story made the local news today. I personally think the stadium should be built, essentially every game that R.J. Reynolds plays is a road game. While you hate to use this word, I feel 100% that this plan to block the stadium construction has some racial and social undertones. Reynolds is in a very affluent part of the city and I've had some residents tell me off the record that some residents have concerns that the stadium will bring unwanted people, gangs, violence, and unwanted traffic into their neighborhoods. Not so sure its really racial but rather certain people who have been blessed with wealth are pricks. Same type of people who pay 200k plus for the down town condos in W-S and Greensboro to be close to all of the nice restaurants, clubs, and night life and then whine and complain about the noise that goes along with those events and venues until they are able to flex their political muscles and get unreasonable ordinances passed. Bottom line if you don't like the traffic and noise that goes along with city life then move to the county.
