Default State Championship Pick'em

Pick your ponies:

1A
Plymouth vs Murphy
Murphy has turned into a small school powerhouse and that continues here as Plymouth will end up hiding under a rock after all this is over with.
Murphy 37 Plymouth 6.

1AA
Swain County vs Southwest Onslow
Swain is just too complete a team for the Onslow team. Swain comes into this game as a huge juggernaut that is actually tested compared to previous years.
The Outcome: Swain 42 SW Onslow 14

2A
East Lincoln vs Tarboro
Well both #1 seeds cruised into the title game and have a serious showdown. I"m not sure too much on this matchup! It looks very close. Tarrbor's defense will be the difference in this game.
I'll pick Tarboro 24-21.

2AA
South Iredell vs Carrboro
If your name is Olaf, you'll like the Vikings' chances against an undefeated Carrboro squad. South Iredell keeps coming up big in big games and it happens here.
27-25

3A
Concord vs Havelock
The upstart Spiders take on the athletic Havelock Rams. They are lead by a do-all Pharoah Cooper and a good RB Evans. This team is a bit like Hickory Ridge, quick scoring ability and undersized, but technically sound defense that will hit you hard and quickly get to the ball if out of position. BJ is hurt, but will play and will be utilizing his other arm which I'm not sure how much he's done. Havelock's hard hitting defense has not yet seen a team like Concord that can equally smack you in the mouth and hard running of Rocky Reid will be the difference in the game. Why? Because he is shifty, runs hard and has equally good speed. You can't just tackle him he keeps plays going.

However, the Rams are legit, and just have too much for the Spiders in this one. BJ will play a good game, but I think he comes up just short in a heartbreaker.
Havelock 42 Concord 38

3AA
Catholic 22 vs N. Guilford 34
Well well, Northern Guilford is a legit team, they have plenty of speed and a very big and athletic o-line which opens up holes for TJ Logan. His counterpart is part of a balanced punishing attack of the Pope's boys. However sound as Catholic is, they have yet to see a punishing attack like the one the boys from Greensboro are bringing. Hate to say this, but I think Catholic ends up headed back home with their tails between their legs. The skinny, Elijah Hood will have a great game, but Guilford will be too much.

4A
New Bern 27 vs 21 Porter Ridge
Analysis and Bio:
Well the New Bern Bears (out of the coastal area) led by hard-hitting and shifty Cody Purdie and efficient QB (#2) Josh Taylor. He is a dual-threat QB who throws with great efficiency. He never posts gawdy, eye-popping numbers but protects the ball and manages the game well, while putting up solid stats. Against a very disciplined Porter Ridge team this is crucial. I really like this matchup the most out of all the matchups. I think this game will come down to the wire. Porter Ridge does not have the explosive offenses they have had in years past, put they like New Bern play smash-mouth disciplined ball. Jac Watkins is a solid back who gets the job done and keeps New Bern's attack pretty balanced.

With Porter Ridge, they have a slightly undersized, but fast and technically sound defense, I have a feeling New Bern won't readily run up the score in this one. I think the scoring will be in the twenties within one score. Hardin will have his boys ready to play for sure.

4AA
Butler vs Jack Britt

Analysis and Bio:

This team features the upstart Bucs of Jack Britt (Fayetteville) playing 'host' to the explosive Butler Bulldogs out of Butler (Matthews - Charlotte). In case your wondering, Jack Britt features an explosive quick scoring offense with an opportunistic defense that plays to its opponents.

They take advantage of mistakes and create turnovers on defense to give their offense short fields to score quick. Butler can easily hold off Jack Britt by making them go the length of the field and playing field position. This team from a military town is playing with a mission due to the fact that coach Rimpf's brother was deployed to Afghanistan and subsequently lost both his legs by a roadside bomb while in his convoy. ...Jack Britt is indeed the Cinderella team of all the playoffs (and classes).

The Outcome: Butler 42 Jack Britt 21
We all know what Butler can do with Kalambayi and that strong defense and the good pair of Marquez and the QB. This should be a long day for the Bucs due to the complete team that Butler fields. It is a shame that Jack Britt had to run into Butler, they might stand a chance against New Bern and some other teams in other divisions.

I told you earlier this week CHSAIR...Many will reveal themselves this week. We know who we can celebrate with tomorrow. I will never doubt this group of kids. I have watched them overcome the odds for many years.. I'm talking going back to boys and girls club. They have a special character that doesn't come along that often. We have a big challenge on our hands but big challenges are what these savages have been assembled for.
